Breathtakingly Beautiful: Skandagiri Sunrise

The times are not the best. Most of us are confined to the four walls of our house, either with or away from our loved ones. Indeed all of us are doing our part, fighting together the pandemic that has hit nations across the planet. Nevertheless, it is quite challenging to be at home 24×7, working, relaxing, contemplating and waiting for the storm to pass. Staying in quarantine, we do have a lot of spare time on our hands, so why not ponder upon and make a list of all the things we always wanted to do but kept postponing by finding every excuse in the book. And while you do that if let’s say a night trek made it to your list of things, then I have the perfect place to tell you about in Karnataka – The Skandagiri hills!

The magnificent Sun appearing shyly from behind the parting clouds

Skandagiri, also known as Kalavara Durga is a mountain fortress located approximately 65 km from Bangalore. The peak of the mountains is at an altitude of about 1450 meters. This place is famous for its moderately difficult night trek and breathtaking sunrise view among the rising clouds.

Skandagiri is one of the MOST stunning places that I have visited. I found myself literally above the clouds. As the morning sun shyly appears from behind the slowly parting clouds in the horizon, one is left in awe of the beauty that is contained in the dawn. The strong cold winds blowing across only add to the scenic delight.

A view so pleasant!

Here’s an interesting fact. The hills are believed to be the location of one of the many fortresses Tipu Sultan built for fighting against the British Raj. After Tipu Sultan lost to the Brits, the fortress was dismantled around 1791 AD. Now all that remains of the fortress are some unrecognizable walls and remains of an abandoned temple at the peak. However, the beauty of the hills has only increased with time.

Sky, Clouds, Mountains, Winds, what more do you want?

If you dare, do sit at the edge of the cliff to experience feelings of fear, excitement and adventure rushing through your whole body.

Breathtaking indeed, isn’t it?

Trust me, you will not need any filter for the photographs you click at various spots over here. You can capture so many stunning stills that your ‘gram feed will easily be flooding for a week! I also found this place to be perfect to show off the yoga postures you’ve been practising for so long.

Urdhva Dhanurasana or simply Chakrasana
